Who: Thompson Pipe Group, Kiewet, City of Phoenix
What: Sliplining Val Vista Transmission Main
Where: Phoenix, Arizona
Why: The Val Vista Transmission Main Rehabilitation project required 4,681 linear feet of 90” steel pipe. The S200 pipe was sliplined into to an existing 96” prestressed concrete cylinder pipeline. The project included two horizontal bends.
What is slipling: A pipe is sliplined when a new carrier pipe is inserted into a larger existing in-situ pipe. After installation of the new carrier pipe, the annular space between the two pipes is grouted and the pipeline is returned to service. This has been a commonly used method for rehabilitating sanitary sewers, and in recent years has become more commonplace in water main replacement.
Sliplining benefits include:
• Speed of installation
• Affordability, compared to open trench options
• Reduces traffic and environmental distribution
The project was completed in first quarter 2021 and is in service.
